At heart, humans are
meaning-seeking creatures. In times of pleasure and pain, in the way they
construct governmental or economic systems, and in the ways they worship,
humans seek meaning and purpose in the way they organize their world.
Use the following
sources to either agree or disagree with the quote above.
SOURCE A: THE
CODE OF HAMMURABI
“If a slave say to
his master, ‘You are not my master,’ and if they convict the slave, his master
shall cut off the slave’s ear.”
SOURCE B: QUOTE
ATTRIBUTED TO THE BUDDHA (about 500 B.C.E.)
“I have shown you the
path that leads to liberation. But you should know that liberation depends upon
yourself.”
SOURCE C: Confucian
Saying (500 B.C.E.):
A good
kingdom must provide “sufficiency of food, sufficiency of military equipment,
and the confidence of the people in their ruler”
SOURCE D:
HISTORIAN MICHAEL RIQUET (1985)
“It has been
calculated that at Rome in 250, under Pope Cornelius, ten thousand Christians
obliged to fast could provide, from a hundred days' fasting, a million rations
a year. These more or less regular offerings were supplemented by gifts made to
the Church by rich converts.”
SOURCE E: A VERSE
FROM THE ISLAMIC HOLY BOOK: QUR’AN 4:29:
“O ye who believe! Do
not squander one another’s wealth in vanities, but let there be amongst you
traffic and trade by mutual good will.”
SOURCE F: AN ABBASSID
SLAVE GIRL SAID THE FOLLOWING (960 C.E.):
“I was one of the
girls that al-Muqtadir liked and took pleasure in. He was one of God’s most
accomplished creatures when it came to playing the lute and he had a most
moving voice, though he did his best to keep it secret. He would only play and
sing when he was alone with his slavegirls, his intimate companions, and with
me.”
SOURCE G: POPE URBAN
II, COUNCIL OF CLERMONT, 1095, A SPEECH THAT STARTS THE CRUSADES:
“For
your brethren who live in the east are in urgent need of your help, and you
must hasten to give them the aid which has often been promised them. For, as
the most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked them. I, or
rather the Lord, beseech you as Christ's heralds to publish this everywhere and
to persuade all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and
rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from
the lands of our friends. All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or
in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate remission of sins. O what a
disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should
conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious
with the name of Christ! Let those who have been accustomed unjustly to wage
private warfare against the faithful now go against the infidels and end with
victory this war which should have been begun long ago. Let those who for a
long time, have been robbers, now become knights. Let those who have been
fighting against their brothers and relatives now fight in a proper way against
the barbarians.”
